From December 2025, a ride in your vehicle from another state to Uttarakhand will be an expensive affair. The government has decided to levy a green tax on non-state vehicles to fight against pollution and shield the sensitive Himalayan ecosystem. This move comes amid mounting pressure on the local air quality and rising traffic from the surrounding states.
Tourism in Uttarakhand has grown rapidly. Thousands of passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles enter daily from states like Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and Haryana. Heavy traffic and rising emissions have started affecting the mountain ecosystem. To prevent further damage, officials approved the Uttarakhand green tax. The money gathered from the tax will be utilized by the government for protecting the environment. The funds will be used to install EV charging stations, upkeep hill roads and enhance air monitoring systems.
Only out-of-state vehicles going into Uttarakhand will pay the tax. Local vehicles registered in the state will be exempted. The charge will differ based on vehicle type and engine capacity.
Collection will be automatic. Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras will read numbers of vehicles at state borders. After being detected, the system will compute and charge the interstate vehicle tax electronically. This method minimizes manual handling and makes it transparent.
With respect to travelers, the new tax will lead to marginally higher costs of travel. However, the actual amount remains insignificant when set against the total trip cost. With respect to commercial vehicle operators, the levy may have a more direct effect on daily operations. Logistics companies may change the routes or switch to less polluting fuel types (CNG or electric) to minimize costs in the future.
Authorities believe the measure will encourage responsible driving and facilitate lower-emission transport. Cleaner roadways will make popular travel sites like Rishikesh, Mussoorie and Nainital healthier and more sustainable.
Uttarakhand's action shows a strategic long-term perspective. By charging vehicles that pollute the most, the state encourages electric mobility and eco-friendly travel. Officials will also offer incentives to increase EV adoption, build electric vehicle parking and expand public transport to key towns. Ultimately, these initiatives will allow Uttarakhand to preserve its natural scenery while enabling slow and steady economic growth.
