Delhi has been expanding its clean mobility space as 570 electric buses are being readied to be deployed across Delhi in the next few months by GreenCell Mobility. This move complements Delhi’s efforts in enhancing its zero-emission public transportation services amidst a surge in mobility demands. This announcement has followed the closure of an investment round worth USD 89 million by investors International Finance Corporation, British International Investment, and Tata Capital. This cements the interest in electric mobility systems in India.
Notably, a recent flag-off event at Ramlila Maidan has showcased an important milestone in this regard. In this regard, an event led by Delhi’s Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Shri Nitin Nabin, National President of the BJP, successfully flagged off 500 electric buses into service. This move appears to be a shift from pilot-based tests of electric buses to the wider adoption of electric public transportation in the city.
Under the contract, GreenCell Mobility will supply 12-meter-long air-conditioned electric city buses that are designed to give optimum performance under Delhi operating conditions. With an increased battery capacity, the buses will run for longer hours every day and support high-density traffic patterns and frequent stop cycles. The buses will be stationed at depots in Rajghat, Dilshad Garden, and Seemapuri.
Each vehicle will be equipped with safety, access, and service transparency enhancements. With the inclusion of Integrated Transport Management Systems, there will be more system-based cooperative vehicle operation. Additionally, there will be information services for passengers, vehicle tracking, cameras, and facilities for differently abled passengers to use the transport services. All these enhancements will seek to remove ambiguity from the services provided.
According to a representative at GreenCell, Delhi’s electric buses indicate a change in India’s transport strategy. The focus is no longer just on testing various options, but rather on how to take successful strategies further. There is growing recognition of how adequate funding, along with an enabling policy and operational environment, is important for urban mobility requirements.
Other than Delhi, other implementations by GreenCell Mobility involve electric bus deployments across various states. This includes big deployments in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Surat, and Puducherry. Another implementation is electric intercity buses operated by the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation.
Currently, GreenCell Mobility runs over 1,200 electric buses across the country through more than 270 charging stations. In addition, with projects awarded under national electric mobility schemes, the number of buses is set to grow to over 3,700 in the near future. This can be regarded as a growing synergy between public sector bodies in charge of public transport and private players in developing electric mobility infrastructure.
Through its Electric Mobility-as-a-Service model, the company continues to collaborate with governments and transport authorities in the provision of transportation solutions towards achieving cleaner and sustainable transportation systems. The focus remains the same but on reliability and sustainability rather than on unstructured but rapid growth.
