Telangana has deliberately included women in the mainstream of their transportation services workforce by calling for expressions of interest from women to join as bus drivers for the first time as part of this systemic government-level initiative. This comes after much deliberation over the issue of gender diversity within the age-old male-dominated domain of transportation as bus drivers.

With the new initiative in place, the state government and its partners have now initiated the first group of female bus drivers. This group of women will receive comprehensive training to handle modern buses meant for public transport on all state routes. An initiative was launched to develop a pipeline of talent for women in the field of public transportation. This training includes light and heavy passenger buses.

This initiative seeks to counter both the lack of drivers in the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) as well as the underrepresentation of females in the technical transport field. It is the intention of this initiative to open up job opportunities in the technical transport industry in Telangana State that had never been accessible to females before.

However, the state of Telangana also has its own example of women participation in bus driving in the form of V. Saritha, who not only became the first woman to work as a bus driver for TSRTC but also drove electric buses between major routes. The fact that she drives sleek electric vehicles among major routes is itself an example of how women can work as bus drivers.

According to participants in the initiative, the move is an extension of gender inclusion and may have a positive spin-off in other sectors towards equity in the workplace. Women participating in the initiative have been promised professional training and evaluation for readiness in the challenging environment of driving public buses.

Transport sector leaders reported that the end state would not be simply the attainment of numerical targets but the normalization of the presence of women behind the wheels of public service vehicles. The inclusion of women drivers in public service vehicles would enable improved views of road safety and would eventually bring about changes in how the public perceives the roles of women in technical/operational areas.

With this recruitment phase underway, the project continues to be monitored by the concerned entities in the governmental and social sectors, as this is indeed a positive recognition for the inclusion in the transport services in Telangana.
