The Tata Motors Ltd.'s manufacturing plant located in Lucknow has produced a total of 10th lakh commercial vehicles over the last thirty years and recently celebrated this achievement with a ceremony that was attended by representatives from the Government of Uttar Pradesh and the Company in Lucknow on April 15th, 2026.
The milestone vehicle, an electric bus, reflects the ongoing transition within India’s commercial vehicle segment toward cleaner mobility solutions. The rollout was flagged off by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath with N. Chandrasekaran (Group Executive Officer) and Girish Wagh (Group’s Chief Operating Officer), as well as other members of L&T's Management Team, including Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak and numerous other dignitaries.
Established in 1992, the Lucknow plant is now one of the major manufacturing centres for the Company's commercial vehicles. Located on almost 600 acres, the plant produces several types of commercial vehicles (trucks and buses), including diesel powered, all-electric and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, among others. It currently has a production capacity of over 1,00,000 commercial vehicles per year, supplying both India's domestic market as well as export customers.
This location has about 8,000 people employed there either through direct or indirect means and creates jobs in the region. It runs skill building programs that could be considered both from a government program perspective (Kaushalya, Lakshya, and the Saksham program) as well as through the apprenticeship programs it manages to prepare skilled employees for the automotive industry. As per company reports, the number of women joining the workforce continues to increase as does the number of persons with disabilities employed or having access to employment opportunities with the organisation.
The plant is a water-positive facility and is powered entirely by renewable energy. Automation, robotics and AI based systems are utilized to increase manufacturing efficiency, safety and quality standards.
The milestone illustrates how much both Tata Motors Ltd. and the state of Uttar Pradesh have worked together through their shared goals in creating jobs, developing industries, and promoting sustainable transportation options. The state has been working hard to make Uttar Pradesh one of the premier manufacturing locations in the country through continued investment in and improvements to infrastructure and through its various policy initiatives to encourage manufacturers to set up operations there.
The achievement occurred during an unprecedented time in which the Commercial Vehicles Sector of India is transitioning to electric-powered vehicles (EV) and increased manufacturing efficiencies. Plants with large manufacturing capabilities such as the one located in Lucknow will be integral to this transition through both volume production capabilities and adoption of technology.
