The Meghalaya government will soon require commercial vehicle owners to display driver information inside their vehicles, Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh said on Tuesday. The rule aims to improve safety for passengers and accountability for drivers in the state’s commercial transport sector.

“All commercial vehicle owners will have to display drivers’ information, including their names, licences and contact numbers and addresses, inside their cars,” Lyngdoh stated.

The announcement followed a high-level meeting led by Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, who oversees the transport department. According to Lyngdoh, this move will apply to all vehicles with commercial permits issued through district transport officers (DTOs). Private vehicles, government-owned cars, and those operated by government undertakings will not fall under this regulation.

“The objective is to instill a sense of safety among travellers, and possibly reduce criminal intention, if any, on the part of the drivers of commercial vehicles,” Lyngdoh said. He added, “When passengers know who is driving them, it creates a sense of trust and accountability.”

Tourism in Meghalaya continues to rise, and the government believes safety is essential to that growth.

“Tourism is on the rise in Meghalaya, and the display of drivers’ details brings a greater responsibility to ensure visitors’ safety,” Lyngdoh said.

The rule is meant as a preventive step to strengthen security across the state’s commercial passenger vehicle network.

“Once the official notification is issued, commercial vehicle owners will be given one month to comply with the directive,” Lyngdoh, who is also the government spokesperson, added.

“This is a simple but effective measure. It empowers passengers and discourages unlawful behaviour,” he said.

The government’s plan, while straightforward, reflects a broader push for transparency and safety in Meghalaya’s growing commercial transport system.
