The government plans a big change. From April, it will require e-rickshaw manufacturers to clear audits of their production facilities before they can get approval for any new model.
This rule is simple but sharp. If a firm wants to sell a new electric rickshaw, it must first show that its factory meets the standard. A testing agency will check the plant. Only then can the vehicle hit the road.
The move targets poor-quality makers. Many firms today import motors and parts, then assemble them without real checks. Some vanish overnight. These rules aim to stop that.
“This request has come from the industry bodies. There is a need to have regulations as e-rickshaws and e-carts are becoming very popular across urban and rural areas. There is a need to ensure that only good quality e-rickshaws ply on roads,” said an official.
Right now, over 400 firms claim to be e-rickshaw manufacturers. But many lack proper equipment or staff. The new rule filters out weak links. It keeps only those who invest in safety and quality. It also protects buyers. When a vehicle is made in a controlled, audited space, it’s more likely to run safely.

Another key change: fitness certificates for electric commercial vehicles will now last just one year. At present, they last three.
This shorter cycle means more checks. It ensures these vehicles stay within the 25 kmph speed cap. It also keeps the batteries, brakes, and motors in check.
From April 2027, e-rickshaws must meet stricter design rules. New models must use lithium-ion batteries. Lead-acid batteries will no longer be allowed.
They must also have windscreen wipers, better stability, and a mechanism to stop tampering with the motor.
The electric vehicle sector is booming. In just five years, over 16 lakh e-rickshaws have been registered across India. But growth needs control. These new rules aim to protect the sector, not block it. They raise the bar without raising barriers.
