Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta laid the foundation stone for a five-storey electric bus depot at Hari Nagar on 22 September 2025. Spread over 6.22 acres, the depot will house around 400 electric buses and include commercial spaces, parking lots, and dormitories for Delhi Transport Corporation employees.

Speaking at the ceremony, part of the ongoing Sewa Pakhwada 2025 fortnight marking the birthday of the Prime Minister, chief minister Rekha Gupta said, “This project will provide a fillip to the transport sector in Delhi, redefine working conditions and provide world-class facilities for commuters.”

The depot is designed to be more than a bus parking facility. Chief minister Rekha Gupta emphasized its broader vision, saying, “With this depot, capable of housing around 400 e-buses and equipped with state-of-the-art charging infrastructure, our government reaffirms its commitment to sustainable mobility. This project is not just a bus depot, it is the foundation of a greener, more efficient Delhi.”

Financial sustainability is a key feature of the Hari Nagar depot. Around 2 lakh square feet of retail and commercial space will be part of the complex. This will generate revenue to offset project expenses. The facility will also offer 324 car parking slots, 104 two-wheeler spaces in the basement, and 26,257 square feet for Delhi Transport Corporation offices and dormitories. A modern commercial hub with malls and office spaces will also be integrated, making the depot a multi-purpose facility.

Sustainability measures include a 500-kilowatt rooftop solar power plant, a 170-kilolitre-per-day sewage treatment plant, and a rainwater harvesting system to recharge groundwater. Nearly 740,000 square feet of built-up space will be supported by a dedicated 33 kV electrical substation. Officials said the project will cost ₹420 crore and is expected to be completed within 24 months.

Chief minister Rekha Gupta also outlined plans to expand Delhi’s electric bus fleet from 3,000 to 6,000 over the next year. Referring to the Shadipur Depot project, she added that residential colonies are being developed to provide housing for Delhi Transport Corporation families, ensuring better living conditions. She said, “Where past governments neglected the lifeline of Delhi, we are reviving it. This depot is proof that with the right intent and planning, Delhi Transport Corporation can once again be the pride of Delhi.”

The Hari Nagar depot is a model of modern public transport infrastructure. By combining efficient transport facilities, commercial spaces, and sustainability features, it is set to redefine commuting in Delhi and set a benchmark for future projects in the city.
