A major milestone for India’s green mobility transition was marked on Tuesday as NHEV and Transvolt Mobility signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to deploy 1,000 electric trucks in New Delhi. This announcement follows a year-long technical trial that began on World EV Day last year in Chennai and focused on the commercialization of electric commercial vehicles across freight routes in India.
The initiative was led by Ease of Doing Business, which had earlier piloted the commercial prototyping of e-trucks in collaboration with Transvolt Mobility. On World EV Day in 2024, stakeholders decided to create a pathway for financing and incentivising heavy duty electric trucks to accelerate the deployment nationwide
Sudhendu J Sinha, Advisor at NITI Aayog, highlighted the policy’s momentum, saying, “PM E-DRIVE has brought electric trucks under its incentive coverage. The scale and speed of private capital deployment in NHEV confirm that the policy trajectory is headed in the right direction. The overwhelming response from various Zero Emission Trucking (ZET) stakeholders is encouraging.”
A ₹500 crore blended climate financing instrument was introduced on August 1, 2025, to invite expressions of interest from stakeholders. According to Ease of Doing Business, this is projected to finance 720–810 e-trucks under a structured Viability Gap Funding (VGF) model.
Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) are also driving adoption. NHEV recently received $7 million in VGF, while Transvolt Mobility secured a $20 million equity investment from IFC. These developments are expected to accelerate the transition of surface transport towards zero-emission solutions.
“This deployment, coming out of a comprehensive technical and commercial exercise, is extending Ease of Doing Business on both technical interoperability and climate financing fronts,” said Abhijeet Sinha, National Program Director at Ease of Doing Business. He further noted that “E-truck manufacturers, and infra & fleet operators are determined to reduce electric truck costs from ₹1.25 crore to ₹90 lakh to offer around 10 per cent lesser logistics cost in comparison to diesel fleet operators.”
Transvolt Mobility will own and operate the new fleet of 1,000 e-trucks. According to Siddesh Rai, Vice President at Transvolt Mobility, these trucks will be deployed not only across freight routes but also in construction projects, shipyards, mines, and ports. They will connect multimodal logistics Gati Shakti Cargo Terminals (GCTs) and transport commodities such as cement, steel, coal, automobiles, fertilisers, foodgrains, and petroleum products.
“Now, with NHEV, we are getting the opportunity to offer quick trials and deployments to potential public PSUs, corporations, mines & ports interested in leasing heavy duty electric trucks, dumpers & tippers,” added Rai.
The rollout comes at a time when sales of e-trucks nearly doubled in August 2025, buoyed by the Centre’s ₹500 crore incentive scheme launched in July under the PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement (PM E-DRIVE). The Ministry of Heavy Industries has notified guidelines that provide upfront subsidies ranging from ₹2.7 lakh to ₹9.3 lakh per truck, making heavy duty vehicles more accessible for fleet operators.
This deployment signals a turning point for India’s electric mobility ecosystem. The electric commercial vehicle sector will play a crucial role in decarbonizing India’s commercial vehicle sector with strong policy support, financing, and partnership between public and private stakeholders.
