India’s electric commercial vehicle market is gaining speed in 2025. Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka have taken the top three spots for electric small commercial vehicle and light commercial vehicle sales in the first seven months of the year. Together, these three account for 43 per cent of the 7,054 electric light goods carriers sold between January and July.

The segment has recorded a 10 per cent rise in retail sales year on year. Much of this comes from the light goods carrier sub-segment. These are zero-emission small commercial vehicles and light commercial vehicles used for goods movement. Between January and July this year, 4,403 units were sold. That is a 15 per cent jump over last year and represents 62 per cent of total e-CV sales, up from 59 per cent in the same period of 2024.

Momentum has been building since May. For three straight months, sales crossed the 1,000-unit mark. July saw 1,248 units sold. This was the second-best month after March 2024, which clocked 2,156 units in the final month of the FAME II incentive scheme.

State-wise performance

Vahan data shows Maharashtra in the lead. The state sold 813 electric SCVs and LCVs in the first seven months, taking an 18 per cent share of the market. Sales were down three per cent compared to last year, but it remains the largest buyer of electric light goods carriers.

Tamil Nadu is second with 725 units sold and a 16 per cent share. Karnataka follows in third with 403 units and a 9 per cent share. Delhi ranks fourth with 382 units. That is nearly 9 per cent of the market, though slightly lower than last year by one per cent. Uttar Pradesh has slipped to fifth place with 299 units, down a sharp 48 per cent year on year.

Some smaller states have seen strong gains. Rajasthan sold 250 units, up 112 per cent. Kerala recorded 224 units, up 124 per cent. Odisha sold 217 units, up 171 per cent. Haryana grew the fastest with 193 units, a jump of 264 per cent.

Looking ahead

In just seven months, sales have reached 70 per cent of last year’s total of 10,076 units. The electric commercial vehicle segment is on track for a new annual record. More new models are entering the market. Businesses are turning to e-SCVs and e-LCVs for cleaner and cost-efficient intra-city and inter-city operations. The shift looks set to continue.
