Morigaon Cracks Down on Commercial Vehicle SOP Violations

Tuesday's ambitious enforcement campaign saw Morigaon district officials storm the streets to curb widespread commercial vehicle rule infractions. Under direction by the Circle Officer, the District Transport Officer, the Executive Officer of the Morigaon Municipal Board, and local police, the combined operation aimed at SOP breaches that had long hindered traffic flow and threatened public safety.

Several drivers were fined for violating the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) set down by the District Commissioner in November 2024 by neglecting assigned parking zones directly.

Issued on November 15, 2024, the SOP set explicit operational limits for critical intersections like Ghankanta Baruah College Chariali, Gurukul, MB Park Chariali, and Usha Chariali. The inner center of Morigaon town was closed to buses, tempos, passengers, and magic vans. Similarly, low-power rickshaws, e-carts, and e-rickshaws were not allowed to negotiate high traffic routes.

"Daily hazards come from unregulated vehicle mobility. We're protecting lives, not just enforcing rules." An enforcement agent on scene remarked. 

The crackdown is not one-time. Similar initiatives, under a fresh emphasis on commercial vehicle policing and public safety, officials have confirmed will follow. Operators breaking Assam traffic regulations could face more severe fines and penalties going forward.

The Morigaon government urged in a public statement all operators of commercial and electric vehicles to implement the SOP exactly. The message is clear: follow the guidelines, keep in assigned areas, or risk action.

Tuesday's action represents a turning point in the treatment of SOP infractions as Morigaon tries to strengthen traffic discipline under Assam's changing transport strategy.
