Daimler truck has announced the establishment of its new CV facility in Indonesia. This facility, aimed towards expanding the global footprint is supported by Daimler India Commercial Vehicle
While the move strengthens Daimler’s Southeast Asia presence, the deeper narrative is India’s ascension from an operational base to a global manufacturing mentor.
Just over a decade ago, DICV was a new entrant in Daimler’s global network. Today, it’s at the forefront of global operations. “It’s a proud moment,” says Satyakam Arya, MD & CEO of DICV. “Our capabilities are now shaping the global narrative, not just supporting it.”
That transformation didn’t happen overnight. Over the last 12 years, DICV has not only proven its mettle in a challenging domestic market but has also pioneered processes and innovations that have since become best practices across Daimler’s network. One standout example: DICV became the first in Daimler’s history to localise all the 5 Cs: cylinder block, cylinder head, connecting rod, camshaft, and crankshaft. Today, Indian suppliers developed under DICV’s ecosystem are contributing to global operations.
India’s commercial truck market is notoriously demanding, both in terms of cost sensitivity and rugged performance. DICV’s response was to create a fully localised product line with more than 90% localisation. The result wasn’t just affordability but reliability tailored to Indian conditions.
More than market share, DICV reshaped industry expectations. Introducing air-conditioned cabins at a time when they were rare in the commercial vehicle segment, establishing a new brand from scratch, building an extensive sales and service network, and achieving an 80% customer retention rate, these milestones built Daimler’s confidence to replicate the model elsewhere.
Indonesia’s heavy mining economy and a product profile similar to India makes it an ideal choice for Daimler truck’s next growth market. DICV’s HX-Based commercial trucks have gained popularity in Indonesia
While the new plant in Indonesia is a major move in its own right, what’s remarkable is India’s involvement in shaping it. “Our manufacturing engineering team co-created the plant layout, processes, and operational blueprint alongside the Indonesian team,” Arya shares. “We’ve had engineers stationed on-site for weeks and months, and we still have four Indian engineers there helping to ramp up operations.”
So, what truly sets DICV apart in Daimler’s global network?
“Our lean and frugal approach,” Arya says. “We are far more agile and cost-efficient while maintaining high-quality standards. Our ability to adapt quickly and embrace digitalisation faster than many other regions has made a difference.”
This operational agility has made DICV’s manufacturing practices a benchmark, influencing Daimler’s decision to use India as a model for expansion. While the localisation strategy in Indonesia will be more selective, given the country’s current vendor ecosystem, India’s expertise will continue to play a central advisory role. Where viable, Indian vendors and India-ASEAN free trade agreements may also come into play to strengthen cost efficiencies.
The launch of its Indonesian venture catapults Daimler India Commercial Vehicles (DICV) into a new league, transforming it from a local manufacturing base into a global center of competence. This strategic move highlights a significant shift in Daimler Truck's global strategy, empowering regional hubs like India to not only contribute to but also lead global initiatives.
For Daimler Truck, this expansion is more than a new pin on the map. It is a powerful endorsement of the immense value DICV delivers, not just in manufacturing excellence, but as a dynamic engine for innovation, efficiency, and sustainable growth.
As Daimler Truck fortifies its presence across emerging markets, the blueprint for success will increasingly be drawn from India. DICV's playbook of lean engineering and frugal innovation is set to define the global value proposition, delivering world-class trucks without compromise.
