There is good news for commercial vehicle owners. The central government is preparing to roll out an annual FASTag pass for commercial vehicles in the coming months. Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has confirmed that the government is actively considering this step for both state transport corporation buses and private commercial vehicles.
The move is aimed at easing toll-related hassles and supporting the transport sector, which carries a large portion of the nation’s passengers and goods. The centre had already introduced an annual FASTag pass for private cars a few months ago, and now commercial vehicle owners are set to receive similar benefits.
In addition to the annual pass, the government is also considering providing land at concessional rates to private bus operator groups for building facilities along national highways. This is expected to improve convenience and safety for passengers while boosting operational efficiency for transporters.
Nitin Gadkari stated that according to the Bus and Car Operators Confederation of India, nearly 92 percent of the country’s buses, about two million in total, are privately owned. Every day, around five lakh people travel by air, 2.4 crore by train, 1.15 crore by metro, and 40 crore by bus. Of these, 32 crore passengers depend on private buses. Despite buses being such a major mode of transport, operators have raised concerns about the lack of adequate facilities.
Addressing these issues, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari assured that the government is working on extending similar advantages for state transport buses, private buses, and even cab drivers. He pointed out that the annual FASTag pass worth Rs. 3,000 has already been launched for private car owners, and the new initiative will bring relief to a much larger segment of the transport sector.
Preparations for launching the annual FASTag pass for state transport corporation buses and private commercial vehicles are currently underway. According to the Union Minister, the process may take another three months, but this timeline has not been confirmed.
For now, commercial vehicle operators can look forward to significant relief from daily toll payments in the near future. With the new system in place, they will save both time and money while enjoying smoother travel across national highways.
