The Ultra name has always lived in a slightly different space. Not flashy like heavy trucks, not barebones either. It’s the range that quietly handles city runs, hub-to-hub movement, and the middle ground between last-mile and long haul.

With today’s update, Tata Motors has expanded the Ultra portfolio with four distinct models—three electric and one diesel—each clearly built with a specific operating pattern in mind. No overlap, no confusion. You look at the spec sheet and you immediately know where the truck belongs.

Tata Ultra E.7: Compact, Electric, and Surprisingly Capable

The Ultra E.7 feels like it’s designed for operators who want to convert their fleet to electric without rethinking everything else.

With a GVW of 7,490 kg, it runs a PMSM traction motor producing 240 kW, delivering 950 Nm peak torque (450 Nm continuous). The 96 kWh LFP battery is paired with a CCS2 fast-charging setup, taking roughly 1.5 to 2 hours to charge, fast enough to fit into real-world schedules.

A few things stand out:

  • 26% restart gradeability, which is strong for a truck this size
  • 14 ft deck length
  • 3,100 kg payload with container
  • Up to 180 km range

Tata Ultra E.12: Built for Bigger Electric Loads

The Ultra E.12 moves things into a more serious electric freight zone.

At 11,990 kg GVW, it uses the same 240 kW PMSM motor and torque output as the E.7, but battery options expand to 96 kWh and 147 kWh. That flexibility matters—fleets can spec range based on route, not marketing claims.

Key details worth noting:

  • Payload between 6,000 and 6,300 kg (with container)
  • Deck lengths from 17 ft up to 24 ft
  • 25% restart gradeability
  • Up to 200 km range

The suspension setup is slightly different here, with parabolic springs up front and semielliptical at the rear, and pneumatic drum brakes instead of discs. It feels tuned on purpose for heavier, repetitive runs rather than tight city manoeuvring.

Tata Ultra E.9: The Middle Child That Might Surprise You

The Ultra E.9 sits between the E.7 and E.12, and honestly, it might end up being the most versatile of the three.

With a GVW of 9,300 kg, it actually gets a slightly higher-rated 250 kW motor, while torque figures remain the same. Battery choices again include 96 kWh and 147 kWh, but the headline here is the range—up to 230 km.

Other highlights:

  • 4,000 kg payload with container
  • 23% restart gradeability
  • 17 ft deck / container body
  • Twin rear tyres for better load stability

Tata Ultra T.19: Diesel Still Has a Place

The Ultra T.19 sticks to diesel power with a 3.6L engine, producing 168 HP at 2200 RPM and 600 Nm of torque. Paired with a GB550 MK II 6-speed gearbox, it’s straightforward and familiar.

Specs that define its role:

  • GVW: 18,500 kg
  • Payload: 12,600 kg
  • Load body options from 17 ft to 24 ft
  • 22.2% gradeability
  • Air brakes, tilt and telescopic steering
  • 3-year / 300,000 km warranty

This is clearly aimed at operators who aren’t ready—or able—to shift to electric yet, especially on longer or less predictable routes.

What the Ultra Range Now Looks Like

What’s interesting about this Ultra refresh is how non-overlapping the trucks feel. Each one has a job, and none of them try to do everything.

  • E.7: Dense city runs, controlled routes
  • E.9: Medium payloads with longer daily distances
  • E.12: Heavier electric distribution, hub-to-hub
  • T.19: Diesel reliability where charging still isn’t practical

Final Take: Practical Expansion, Not a Statement Launch

These Ultra series trucks are built for operators who look at range, payload, charge time and restart gradeability before they look at anything else.

Electric where it makes sense. Diesel where it still works best. That balance is probably the most realistic part of this entire line-up.
