Tata Motors has launched new trucks in their existing Prima lineup. With the latest additions to the Prima range, Tata Motors has made it clear that it isn’t betting on a single path for heavy trucking. Instead, the company has widened the Prima portfolio in multiple directions at once, electric, diesel, long-haul, mining, and high-GCW truck applications, reflecting how fragmented demand in the heavy commercial vehicle space has become.

Four models now sit at the centre of this expansion: the Prima E.28K, Prima E.55S, Prima 5532.S, and Prima 3540.K AutoShift. On paper, they may all carry the Prima badge, but in practice, they are meant to do very different jobs.

1) Tata Prima E.28K

The Prima E.28K represents Tata Motors’ push into electric trucking at the 28-tonne mark. With a GVW of 28,000 kg, a 453 kWh lithium-ion battery, and a claimed range of up to 220 km, this truck is clearly designed for predictable, high-utilisation routes. The HV 3000 six-phase traction motor delivers a massive 2,950 Nm of torque, which matters more than top speed in heavy freight. A 6x4 rear-wheel-drive layout, combined with a 32% restart gradeability, suggests the E.28K is being positioned for hub-to-hub logistics, ports, and industrial corridors rather than inner-city work.

2) Tata Prima E.55S

The Prima E.55S comes with a GVW of 55,000 kg, a 470 kW motor, and 2,455 Nm of torque. The claimed range of up to 350 km is ambitious for a vehicle of this size, and features like EBS with regenerative braking hint at Tata Motors focus on energy efficiency rather than just brute force. The use of a bell crank suspension at the rear also points towards long-haul comfort and stability.

3) Tata Prima 5532.S

The Prima 5532.S continues to serve operators who rely on conventional powertrains for long-distance freight. With 320 hp, 1,100 Nm of torque and a 55,000 kg GCW, this truck is clearly aimed at national highway operations. The 365-litre fuel tank and familiar mechanical layout suggest this is a truck built for reliability and ease of service, not experimentation.

4) Tata Prima 3540.K

The Prima 3540.K AutoShift leans into mining and heavy construction work. A 375 hp diesel engine, 1,800 Nm of torque and AutoShift transmission underline its focus on productivity and driver ease in demanding conditions. With a 35,000 kg GVW and limited top speed, it’s obvious this truck is designed for construction sites.

Conclusion

What ties this expanded Prima lineup together isn’t technology alone, but intent. Tata Motors isn’t asking operators to change how they work overnight. Instead, it’s offering multiple tools like electric or diesel, depending on where and how far those trucks are expected to run.
