Tata Motors today expanded its heavy-duty mining portfolio with the launch of the Tata Prima 3540.K, unveiled at its commercial vehicle event. Positioned under the Prima range, the new tipper has been developed for high-load mining and infrastructure applications, where productivity, durability, and safety are critical.
The Prima 3540.K is powered by the newly introduced 8.5-litre Cummins engine, reinforcing Tata Motors’ focus on combining high output with real-world drivability.
At the core of the Prima 3540.K is the Cummins 8.5L diesel engine, producing 375 hp at 1,900 rpm and a peak torque of 1,800 Nm between 1,000 and 1,400 rpm. The strong low-end torque is aimed at heavy-duty haul cycles typically seen in mining environments.
The engine is paired with a G1800 12-speed AMT gearbox, allowing smoother gear shifts and reduced driver fatigue during long operating hours. Power is transmitted through a 48-tonne hub reduction rear axle, supporting high load-bearing capability and durability.
The Prima 3540.K comes equipped with 12x24 mining tyres and is offered with 20.5 cu m and 25 cu m box options, catering to different material densities and site requirements. Suspension duties are handled by a heavy-duty bogie suspension at the rear, while the front uses a parabolic leaf spring setup with an equaliser mechanism.
With a GVW of 35,000 kg, a 300-litre fuel tank, and an 83% gradeability, the truck is designed to handle steep gradients and demanding terrain commonly found in mining and large infrastructure projects.
Tata Motors has equipped the Prima 3540.K with a world-class safety cabin compliant with ECE R29.03 standards. The cabin has been crash-tested for front impact, roof strength, and rear wall integrity, ensuring a protected survival space for the driver.
The truck is also India’s first ADAS Level 2 ready truck in its category under the Prima range. Safety and assistance features include Collision Mitigation System, Lane Departure Warning System, Driver Monitoring System, Lane Keep Assist, Traffic Sign Recognition, Electronic Stability Control, and Tyre Pressure Monitoring System. The Prima range has also received the FICCI Road Safety Award 2024.
With the launch of the Prima 3540.K, Tata Motors has strengthened its presence in the high-capacity mining tipper segment, offering a combination of power, automation, and safety-focused design.
