In an insightful conversation with Mr. Prashant Kumar, Chief General Manager of Marketing and Sales at SML Isuzu, at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025, we delve into the company’s legacy, its strategies to balance varied audiences, and what sets it apart in a competitive market.
SML Isuzu has been a significant player in the Indian automotive sector for the last 40 years. Marking its journey from a truck-making company to a pioneer in factory-built buses, the company has continuously adapted to market needs. Mr. Kumar highlighted a milestone in their history:
“We are the first company in India to start in-house bus production. Earlier, the market relied on chassis sold by companies, with bodybuilders crafting the buses. We revolutionized this with factory-built buses.”
SML Isuzu’s strength lies in its leadership in the school bus market. The company enjoys a substantial market share of 20–24% in this segment, offering a wide range of buses that prioritize safety, comfort, and reliability.
When asked about their unique selling points in a crowded market, Mr. Kumar emphasized the following:
SML Isuzu has built a strong reputation for low maintenance costs, high fuel efficiency, and reliability. Mr. Kumar emphasized that their vehicles require minimal workshop visits beyond regular maintenance, making them a cost-effective choice for commercial use. He stated:
“Our another strength is that vehicle reporting to workshop other than the regular maintenance, it is very, very less. The maintenance cost of operation is less and fuel efficiency is more. Comfort level is more and we have got the market acceptance and market customer perception that SML Isuzu is the product which we can rely on.”
The COVID-19 pandemic posed significant challenges, particularly for SML Isuzu, given its heavy involvement in the school bus segment, which was severely impacted. Mr. Kumar outlined the company’s multi-pronged strategy to recover and thrive, saying:

“We are working on this strategy, and I hope this year too we come out with good financial results.”
