Recognized as the first company in India to introduce fully-built buses, ambulances, and customized vehicles, it has set new benchmarks for innovation and reliability. In an insightful conversation with Mr. Prashant Kumar, Chief General Manager of Marketing and Sales at SML Isuzu, at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025,  we delve into the company’s legacy, its strategies to balance varied audiences, and what sets it apart in a competitive market.

“We are the first company in India to start in-house bus production. Earlier, the market relied on chassis sold by companies, with bodybuilders crafting the buses. We revolutionized this with factory-built buses.”

SML Isuzu’s strength lies in its leadership in the school bus market. The company enjoys a substantial market share of 20–24% in this segment, offering a wide range of buses that prioritize safety, comfort, and reliability.

What Sets SML Isuzu Apart?

When asked about their unique selling points in a crowded market, Mr. Kumar emphasized the following:

  1. Reliability:  “Being a Japanese collaboration, our vehicles are known for their reliability. Commercial vehicles need to stay on the road, not in workshops.”
    The company ensures minimal workshop visits beyond regular maintenance, making its products dependable for commercial operations.
  1. Cost Efficiency & Market Acceptance

SML Isuzu has built a strong reputation for low maintenance costs, high fuel efficiency, and reliability. Mr. Kumar emphasized that their vehicles require minimal workshop visits beyond regular maintenance, making them a cost-effective choice for commercial use. He stated:

“Our another strength is that vehicle reporting to workshop other than the regular maintenance, it is very, very less. The maintenance cost of operation is less and fuel efficiency is more. Comfort level is more and we have got the market acceptance and market customer perception that SML Isuzu is the product which we can rely on.”

Post-COVID Recovery Strategies

The COVID-19 pandemic posed significant challenges, particularly for SML Isuzu, given its heavy involvement in the school bus segment, which was severely impacted. Mr. Kumar outlined the company’s multi-pronged strategy to recover and thrive, saying:

  1. Market Penetration:
    “The strategy was to have, first of all, penetration to all the markets where we are not present.”
    This approach helped SML Isuzu expand into new territories, ensuring a wider customer base.
  1. Product Diversification:
    “Let us do justice with all segments or all the models available to all the areas.”
    The company focused on staff buses, tourist buses, and the introduction of tippers, broadening its portfolio beyond school buses.
  1. Export & Institutional Business Growth:
    Let us expand our export business and institutional business and let us focus on transportation other than school buses.”
    This ensured a steady revenue stream and reduced dependence on a single market segment.
  1. Operational Efficiency & Cost Management:
    “Last year also, steel prices were slightly reduced. This also supported us, and finally, we were able to make profit.”
    By taking advantage of lower raw material costs and optimizing production, SML Isuzu improved its financial performance despite external challenges.

With these strategies in place, Mr. Kumar expressed optimism about the company’s continued success:

“We are working on this strategy, and I hope this year too we come out with good financial results.”

The company’s proprietary telematics solution, SML Sarthi Pro, empowers fleet operators with critical data on fuel efficiency, uptime, and maintenance schedules.
