India reached the milestone of electric mobility with the launch of its first battery swapping-cum-charging station at Panchi Gujran village in Sonipat district of Haryana. Energy in Motion designed the facility at the Delhi International Cargo Terminal (DICT). The facility was launched by Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, on October 8, 2025, in the presence of Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel, H.D. Kumaraswamy. It supports commercial vehicles with dual functionality: battery swapping and charging.
India's logistics industry relies predominantly on commercial vehicles. Long charging cycles had kept electric truck deployment slow. The Sonipat plant addresses that issue through battery swapping to charging station technology.
Once the truck comes in with the battery low, drivers swap it out for a charged one. The spent battery is shipped to the charging station, where temperature, health, and performance are tracked by systems. It's a safety measure, an extension of battery life, and real-time data for fleet managers.
Currently, logistics costs represent 13–14% of GDP. The government aims to lower them below 9% by December 2026. Strengthening highways, integrating road, rail, and waterways, and building efficient infrastructure remain priorities. Facilities like Sonipat improve vehicle turnaround, reduce costs, and benefit traders, industrialists, and farmers.
Minister Kumaraswamy stressed shifting heavy trucks from diesel to biofuel options. Trucks fueled with biofuels cut down on pollution and logistics costs. Integrating battery swapping with biofuel measures enhances India's focus towards sustainable transport.
The Sonipat facility demonstrates how EV infrastructure operates in conjunction with biofuel projects. Operators experience quicker access to energy. Meanwhile, sustainability objectives like reduced emissions and purer air are met.
Located strategically at DICT, the station serves as a key hub in India’s logistics network. Energy in Motion plans 22 more battery swapping stations at major logistics nodes by 2025. Expansion will support electric commercial vehicles nationwide, providing fast, reliable energy solutions.
The project also generates employment opportunities in maintenance and operations. Local jobs increase. Logistics efficiency is enhanced. The Sonipat model can be scaled up and replicated, making battery swapping to charging station solutions the new normal in India.
