India's road transport system relies heavily on long-haul truck drivers. They transport commodities from one state to another, traversing long distances within deadlines. The truckers start early and end late, oftentimes with road obstacles, loading problems and rigid deadlines. Here's a peek into how a typical day is for a truck driver in India.

Beginning Early and Getting Ready for the Trip

Most drivers begin early in the morning. They arrive at the loading spot, cross-check documents, inspect the vehicle and ensure fuel levels. A careful check before the start ensures everything is in place and prevents breakdowns down the line.

Loaded and ready to go, the driver charts the route. The GPS assists, but seasoned drivers also rely on knowledge of the area to steer clear of traffic, poor roads or closed checkpoints.

Driving Long Hours on Indian Roads

An ordinary driving day can extend 10 to 14 hours. On good roads, a driver can travel more than 600 km. But road quality in the Indian highways is variable and could be unpredictable. One hour may be smooth, the next may be through a narrow village road, potholes or steep ghats.

Food is quickly and frequently eaten at roadside dhabas. Drivers prefer places they know for safe food and secure parking. They don’t usually have much buffer time so breaks are often kept short.

Night driving is not uncommon in India, it particularly helps to avoid traffic. But it could also prove to be risky. Inadequate lighting, roaming animals and driver fatigue could create unwanted problems. Yet, the majority of drivers prefer to drive at night.

Handling Delays and Stress

Indian truck drivers often experience delays- at toll plazas, checkpoints and state borders. Police stops or paperwork problems can take hours. Drivers need to have everything in hand: permits, insurance and delivery records.

The work is stressful and pressure from transport agents or customers inquiring about the status of their shipments are constant. Deadlines are tight and a late pickup at one location can impact the next delivery.

In spite of all this, safety should be the number one concern. Even small errors on the road could prove to be expensive in money and time- for the truck, the cargo and other drivers.

Finding a Place to Rest

By the end of the day, drivers locate a place to stop usually by petrol pumps or dhabas which is usually pre planned with room to park, to have food, washrooms and little rest stops.

Most of the drivers sleep inside the truck cabin. Modern trucks come with sleeper cabins which makes it a lot easier for the truckers. For the ones without a sleeping deck, bedding is spread out, sometimes on the seats, sometimes underneath the truck. It's minimal, but drivers make do. A good night's sleep keeps them alert for the next day.

Living Life on the Move

For truck drivers, the vehicle is home. Clothes, equipment, water, food and blankets- everything is carried along. New trucks provide more comfort, but a lot of older trucks still make long runs on a regular basis.

The work is definitely not easy. But it keeps families afloat, drives the economy and keeps commodities flowing across India. Truck drivers are the backbone of supply chains. Without them, supply chains would experience a major hit.

Indian long-distance truck drivers are exposed to long working hours, bad roads and daily stress. Still, they press on- fueled by necessity and obligation. Their place in Indian logistics is essential and needs greater appreciation, better assistance and safer working conditions.
