Piaggio Vehicles Pvt Ltd is preparing to expand its electric 3W business in India. The company has clocked cumulative sales of about 26,000 electric three-wheelers since entering the domestic market in 2019 with offerings like the Ape E‑City.

Piaggio anticipates the L5 segment, encompassing three-wheel passenger and cargo vehicles, achieving 50 percent market penetration midway through 2028. The factors include enhanced charging facilities, lower purchase better and improved servicing and financing options, according to the company.

The firm has recently introduced the Ape E‑City Ultra and Ape E‑City FX Maxx, which have more range and higher performance. In the delivery segment, Piaggio unveiled the Ape E‑Xtra FX with a 9.5 kWh battery and a six-foot cargo platform that is aimed at last-mile logistics services.

Piaggio has also signed contracts with EV ecosystem partners, such as Sun Mobility and Three Wheels United, to deploy 24,000 units in India. The contracts are centered on embedding vehicles with charging and fleet management solutions.

Industry figures show that the electric three-wheeler industry in India doubled within the first nine months of 2024 over the same period in 2023. Piaggio fleet-oriented products feature telematics and extended warranty.

Even with growth expected, Piaggio has pointed to potential issues such as uncertainty in long-term government incentives and regional adoption variation. Southern and western India have been seen as regions where adoption is lower.

Analysts point out that greater availability of vehicles and lower operating costs may impact fleet operations, last-mile cargo and passenger transport markets. Piaggio's future expansion represents a continuation of a shift in India's urban mobility market towards electric three-wheelers.
