Bajaj Auto has entered India's e-rickshaw segment with the launch of the Riki range, as part of its plans to expand beyond its existing portfolio of two- and three-wheelers. The launch is aligned with consistent monthly addition of over 45,000 e-rickshaws in the country, suggesting continued demand for the low-cost last-mile transport.
The company has launched two variants: the passenger model Riki P4005 is priced at Rs 1,90,890 (ex-showroom) and the Riki C4005 cargo model at Rs 2,00,876 (ex-showroom). The P4005 gets a 5.4 kWh battery with a certified range of 149 km while the cargo provides 164 km.
Both models boast a monocoque chassis, independent suspension, hydraulic brakes and a quoted fast-charging time of 4.5 hours. There's also a three-year battery warranty.
As per Samardeep Subandh, President of Bajaj Auto's Intra-City Business Unit, the Riki has been conceptualized to overcome certain consumer pain points related to range anxiety, corrosion-related durability issues in lead-acid battery systems, brake effectiveness, and stability of the vehicle.
Pilot testing was conducted at Patna, Moradabad, Guwahati and Raipur. More than 100 towns in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Assam will come under the initial rollout of the service. Service support will be provided through Bajaj Auto’s existing network.
E-rickshaws remain an important part of urban transport ecosystems and complement most metro, rail, and bus systems. Their usage has increased further during the last few years as demand for shared short-distance mobility increased.
