Electric three-wheelers are everywhere these days, buzzing through cities in Asia, sometimes slowly, sometimes like they are in a hurry. If you look at the top models, China’s HIGO PLUS Electric Tricycle and India’s Mahindra Treo series really dominate the scene. Both promise low running costs, green commuting, and a surprisingly roomy interior for their tiny footprints. But can we really pick a winner? Let’s see.

Electric 3-Wheeler: China’s HIGO PLUS Electric Tricycle

So, the HIGO PLUS is all about stability and space. It has this low center of gravity that supposedly makes it handle better than you’d expect from a three-wheeler. There’s plenty of headroom and foot space and a low footboard that makes hopping in and out easy, which is nice if you are doing the rounds picking up people all day. They even crammed in an extra row of seats in the middle.

Under the hood, it has a 3000W permanent magnet synchronous motor, goes up to 50 km per hour and a battery that stretches about 80 to 110 km. The suspension uses dual rocker arms and there’s a full-color LCD panel that gives you everything you need while driving. Prices range from $2300 to $3000, which is surprisingly reasonable considering all the tech.

Electric 3-Wheeler: India’s Mahindra Treo and Treo Plus

On the other hand, the Treo family is very “made for India.” Both the regular Treo and Treo Plus feel a bit more compact, but they nail the practical stuff. The regular Treo has a 7.4 kWh lithium-ion battery with a real-world range of 110 km, while the Treo Plus stretches it to 150 km on a charge. That’s a big difference if you are actually using it for a full day of work. Top speed is about 55 km per hour, so slightly faster than HIGO PLUS, especially in boost mode.

The wheelbase is 2073 mm which is actually pretty roomy. Legroom is generous and the vehicles have hill hold assist plus 12-degree gradeability. That means you are less likely to panic on an incline. Bonus: Mahindra claims you can save up to six lakh rupees over five years compared to a CNG auto and the five-year or 120000 km warranty means you are not left stranded when the battery ages.

Putting 3-Wheelers Side by Side

Passenger comfort? HIGO PLUS has that extra middle row, so more people can squeeze in. But range and charging is where the Treo series shines. The Treo Plus can go 150 km and charges faster than HIGO PLUS. Both vehicles hover around 50 to 55 km per hour, so not much difference there.

The Treo’s faster charging and longer range is a game-changer. HIGO PLUS feels a little more like a luxury version for city rides, but Treo actually gets the job done.

Conclusion

It is close, and honestly, both have their fans. HIGO PLUS looks neat, stable and comfy, especially if you are carrying multiple passengers. But if you are an everyday driver, someone who wants longer range, quicker charging and lower hassle, Mahindra Treo and Treo Plus probably make more sense. For India’s roads and commuting needs, they just edge out the competition.
