Each year, a curious tradition grows on India’s roads. Foreign travelers arrive in Kerala, not just for houseboats and backwaters, but for something much less conventional, an auto rickshaw road trip. Their mission is simple, but extreme: drive from Kerala's green coastal region to Ladakh's high-altitude cold deserts, in nothing more than a three-wheeled auto rickshaw.

A Tough but Incredible Journey

No part of this route is straightforward. These travelers tend to travel in convoys, traversing more than 3,000 kilometers of mixed terrain, through humid south Indian cities, blistering plains, twisty ghats and then the Himalayan mountain passes. What makes it all the more remarkable is the mode of transport: an auto rickshaw. Designed for city roads, not remotely close for high mountain passes.

But that is the idea. These are not typical holidays. These are adventures, with breakdowns, diversions and slope climbs being a part of the trip. Visitors typically train and prepare for months. Some purchase their rickshaws on the ground. Others hire through specialist travel agencies in Kochi or Thiruvananthapuram, who equip them with additional fuel tanks, trunk racks and even sometimes LED lights for nighttime travel.

Why Leh? Why an Auto?

Leh is more than just a tourist destination. At more than 11,000 feet above sea level, the journey to Ladakh slices through a few of the highest motorable roads in the world. The adventure brings in adventure enthusiasts from all over the world.

Traveling in an auto makes it a lot more unpredictable. Unlike motorbikes or SUVs, autos limited have power and limited suspension, which means drivers have to remain awake, function like teams and improvise non-stop. This, in every possible way, is an unconventional road trip. And yet, that's its charm, driving through landscapes where autos aren't meant to go.

Organized Chaos: The Rickshaw Run

Experiences such as the Rickshaw Run, which are provided by adventure travel organizations, have made this a popular trend. The UK, Australia, Europe, and the US send teams. They give their rickshaws names. They decorate them with crazy artwork. They post their daily challenges on YouTube, Instagram, and Reddit.

But these aren't race competitions. There are no awards, just tales. From fixing a tire in a monsoon-soaked village to camping at the edge of a snow-covered pass, the experiences outlast any medal.

What It Takes to Make It

Preparation is key. Teams bring spares, tools, maps, and occasionally even mechanics. Many of these rickshaws are Bajaj RE or Piaggio Ape models, not exactly built for high altitude. At places like Sarchu or Tanglang La, oxygen is thin and engines feel underpowered. Despite all these challenges, almost all of them successfully finish this ride.

For the locals, these convoys are unusual and charming. Villagers wave their hands, truckers honk in solidarity and roadside workshops offer assistance. The journey turns into a shared experience between the travelers and the land.

Eco-Friendly and Culturally Rich

In comparison to bigger vehicles, 3 wheelers use less fuel and emit fewer emissions. Passengers tend to use these trips to promote local NGOs, awareness for the environment or fundraising for schools.

In addition, the slower speed permits intensive immersion in the culture. Visitors pause at temples, tea shops, festivals and villages that hardly ever encounter tourists. Every kilometer is a new tale not only through incredible views, but through actual human interaction.

A Growing Global Phenomenon

This movement has gained a lot of momentum in the last few years. More and more tourists arrive in India each year to participate in this  journey. Tourism companies have now introduced pre-planned paths, GPS guides, and backup vehicles to aid first timers. Yet, the underlying sense is unchanged: accept the unpredictable, pursue the unattainable and do it all in a vehicle designed for urban streets.
