New Delhi, 28th August 2025, Switch Mobility has handed over the first tranche of EiV12 electric buses to the Delhi Transport Department. This is a reinforcement of Delhi being the Indian city with the highest number of electric buses and represents a critical move toward environmentally friendly mobility. This delivery is part of a Convergence Energy Services Limited (CESL) contract. Under this deal, Switch Mobility will supply 950 EiV12 electric commercial vehicles to Delhi. The handover ceremony included key leaders: Chief Minister Smt. Rekha Gupta, Transport Minister Dr. Pankaj Singh, Member of Parliament Manoj Tiwari, and MLA Surya Prakash Khatri. Their presence showed the importance of this move for Delhi’s clean transport goals.

EiV12: A Modern Commercial Bus

EiV12 is a 12-metre city bus made for urban operations. It has a capacity of 39 people. Its low-floor design allows elderly citizens, children, and mobility-impaired passengers to easily board and alight.

The bus features robust safety features:

  • Wheelchair ramps for universal accessibility.
  • CCTV cameras and panic buttons for security purposes.
  • GPS tracking for route management.
  • Fire Detection and Suppression System for protection.

The lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries on the floor reduce the centre of gravity, enhancing balance and safety. A rear dual-gun charging system enables rapid charging and quicker turnaround.

Smart Technology for Operations

The EiV12 is not just a zero-emission bus. It is a smart electric commercial vehicle. Every bus operates on Switch iON, the firm's telematics platform.

Through Switch iON, operators are able to:

  • Monitor the vehicle's health in real time.
  • Predict service needs before breakdowns occur.
  • Manage routes with data-driven planning.
  • Improve energy use and reduce costs.

In Delhi’s traffic-heavy environment, these functions add reliability and efficiency.

Leadership Perspective

RG Venkataraman, Chief Commercial Officer of Switch Mobility, explained the company’s vision. He said the EiV1Switch Mobility Delivers EiV12 Electric Buses to Delhi Transport Department2 reflects global engineering combined with Indian manufacturing. He added that Switch Mobility aims to build safer, cleaner, and smarter city travel through its new commercial buses.

Delhi’s Push for Clean Mobility

Delhi has made strong progress in building a sustainable public transport system. It already runs more than 1,250 electric buses, the largest such fleet in India. The EiV12 delivery adds capacity and strengthens this leadership.

The city’s priorities are clear:

  • Cut emissions: Diesel buses add to air pollution. Electric buses reduce harmful gases and improve air quality.
  • Enhance commuter experience: Electric buses provide smoother journeys, reduced noise, and state-of-the-art onboard technology.

With the investment in electric commercial vehicles, Delhi is addressing national clean energy targets and leading other urban areas by example.

Switch Mobility: A Leader in Electric Commercial Vehicles

Switch Mobility, which is owned by the Hinduja Group, has emerged as a zero-emission transport global player. The firm was previously called Optare in the UK. It was renamed in 2020 to show its commitment to electrification.

Switch Mobility has supplied over 1,250 electric buses globally. The buses have covered over 150 million kilometres. Its offerings include:

  • EiV12 – the low-floor city bus flagship now operating in Delhi.
  • EiV7 – a compact bus for shorter routes.
  • EiV22 – an electric double-decker bus for high-density corridors.
  • IeV Series – light electric commercial vehicles for logistics and last-mile delivery.

The range demonstrates Switch Mobility's vision: to electrify both passenger transportation and freight transportation with reliable commercial vehicles.

Broader Impact of the EiV12 Fleet

The EiV12 delivery has social, economic, and environmental impacts.

  • Environmental benefits: One bus replaces a diesel vehicle. This results in zero tailpipe emissions, improved air quality, and forward progress on climate objectives.
  • Economic advantages: Electric buses save operating expenses over the years. Reduced fuel expense and lower maintenance render them efficient business transports.
  • Traveler benefits: Riders enjoy quieter journeys, improved access, and safer trips.

The buses will run across Delhi’s busy corridors, carrying thousands of people daily. They will cut noise pollution and lower the carbon footprint of the city.

Building the Future of Urban Transport

With the first fleet on the road, Delhi takes one more step in boldness. The city demonstrates that embracing electric commercial vehicles is not just possible but also practical. The EiV12 is not just a new bus; it is a harbinger of how Indian cities can forge cleaner futures. For Switch Mobility, this rollout is a demonstration of capability. For Delhi, it is an affirmation of leadership in green mobility. As one, they look to a future of cleaner, smarter, and improved public transport for all.
