The Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) will soon launch an upgraded version of the Chennai Bus app. The release will happen within a month as final testing is underway. The new version will improve real-time tracking of Chennai buses. It will help users check arrival and departure times more easily. A senior MTC official confirmed this update.
The app upgrade will replace the current version. It will be available on both Android and iOS. The goal is to make it faster, simpler, and more accurate. Many users have faced issues with GPS tracking. Some buses that are equipped with GPS do not appear on the app. To fix this, MTC will replace old GPS devices with new ones in all 3,400 buses.
The earlier “Chalo Bus” app had similar issues. MTC had migrated to the Chennai Bus app in 2022 for Android and in 2024 for iOS. Still, some small buses do not show in the app. The MTC is also computerizing bus schedules at depots. This allows real-time updates to reach the app and commuters on time.
In addition, MTC is setting up LED boards at major bus stops. These boards display live bus data for users who don’t have the app. Over 18 stops like Broadway, Central, and Nungambakkam already have them. MTC plans to install them in 616 locations. These LED displays show estimated arrival and departure times, bus numbers, and alerts for accidents or delays. They connect directly to the bus app’s servers.
Regular commuters want more features; they suggest that MTC should add a ticketing option with QR codes, like the UTS app by Southern Railway. This MTC upgrade aims to make public transport in Chennai more reliable and user-friendly. With better GPS updates, real-time bus schedules, and modern app support, the city’s bus system is moving closer to smart mobility.
