In a significant move towards sustainable urban mobility, the Delhi government has approved an INR 107-crore project to install electric bus (e-bus) charging infrastructure at four major depots in Dwarka. This development aligns with the city's long-term goal to fully transition its public transport fleet from CNG to electric.
The charging facilities will be set up at Cluster Depot I and II in Sector 22, ISBT in Sector 22, and the DTC Depot in Sector 8. BSES Rajdhani Power Limited will execute the project, handling everything from grid setup to civil works and equipment installation. The project is scheduled for completion within 18 months.
Delhi operates approximately 7,000 public transport buses, including 1,600 electric buses. On average, over 87 lakh commuters use the public transport system daily—25 lakh on DTC buses, 16 lakh on cluster buses, and 46 lakh on the Delhi Metro.
A senior transport department official stated, “The Delhi government is phasing out CNG buses and replacing them with electric ones. Developing charging infrastructure is essential for this transition.” The project has been approved by the Expenditure Finance Committee (EFC).
As per the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Committee’s guidelines, it is the responsibility of power discoms to supply electricity up to the metering point at depots. BSES will also appoint vendors for the civil work and electrical installations required to support the grid.
The government is focused on building long-lasting, financially viable, and future-ready infrastructure. Officials have also been advised to study global best practices in electric vehicle (EV) charging to ensure the system is efficient and scalable.
The finance department has mandated that the project be completed within the sanctioned budget and timeframe, with no provision for cost escalation.
