India is set to deploy 10,900 electric buses in major cities under the PM E-Drive scheme, a national push to support clean urban transport. On Thursday, Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel H.D. Kumaraswamy chaired a meeting to guide the rollout in Telangana, Karnataka, Delhi, and Gujarat. The plan aims to strengthen public mobility using electric commercial vehicles. It will improve air quality and reduce fuel costs in crowded cities.
The Ministry of Heavy Industries confirmed the bus allocation:
The PM E-Drive scheme targets the deployment of 14,028 electric commercial buses by March 2026. The plan began in April 2024 and includes a ₹10,900 crore budget. It is one of the largest electric mobility efforts worldwide.

Minister Kumaraswamy praised the scheme’s progress: “Thanks to the leadership of Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji, India is now taking bold strides toward sustainable urban mobility,” he said. “From Bengaluru to Delhi, cities are actively embracing electric buses to make public transport cleaner, smarter, and more efficient.”
He added that the initiative is more than just a procurement plan: “We are not merely allocating electric buses, we are shaping the future of India’s transport system with innovation and environmental consciousness. With close coordination between the Centre and states like Telangana, Karnataka, Delhi, and Gujarat, we are determined to deliver on the PM e-Drive promise.”
The scheme’s impact goes beyond buses. It supports cleaner cities, efficient transport systems, and a strong shift toward electric commercial vehicles. With this rollout, India moves closer to a future where public transport is not just affordable but also sustainable.
