Environmental rules are getting tighter for modern commercial trucks.  To meet the BS6 pollution standards, major truck makers including BharatBenz and Ashok Leyland have started using a technology called AdBlue.

But what is AdBlue, really?  What makes it crucial for BharatBenz and Ashok Leyland trucks?  And what effect does it have on performance and cost?

 Let's make things easy.

What is AdBlue?

AdBlue is a pure liquid made up of water and urea whose ions have been stripped.  It is used in BS6 commercial vehicles that are equipped with SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) systems.  AdBlue sprayed into the exhaust reduces harmful nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions.

In short, AdBlue cleans the exhaust and the truck is greener.

How BharatBenz and Ashok Leyland Trucks Work

AdBlue forms part of the BharatBenz and Ashok Leyland vehicle emission control system.  Here is how it works:

  •  The truck has a separate tank for AdBlue.
  •  When the engine is running, the system automatically sprays AdBlue into the exhaust.
  •  It combines with the gases in the exhaust and changes NOx into nitrogen and water vapor, which are both safe.

This device helps commercial cars meet emission standards without losing performance.

Does AdBlue make trucks run worse?

Not directly.  AdBlue is not a fuel additive because it doesn't mix with diesel or change the way the engine runs.  Instead, it just cleans up the gasses that come out of the engine after it has burned.

Because BharatBenz and Ashok Leyland trucks use SCR, their engines are designed for both performance and fuel efficiency.  The AdBlue technology just makes sure that the emissions are pure.

 What Is the Cost?

AdBlue is cheap, but you have to replenish it often.  In general:

  •  Depending on how much weight you have and how you drive, a 40L tank may last 3000 to 5000 kilometers.
  •  AdBlue costs about ₹30–₹40 per liter.
  •  This means that the expense of running the business goes up a little, but it's still manageable.

The expense of AdBlue is not a big deal when you think about the price of BharatBenz trucks or Ashok Leyland trucks. The benefit of becoming BS6-compliant is worth it.

 Is It Worth It?

For sure.  If you drive commercial trucks, you have to use AdBlue. It's required for BS6.  But it also has some good things about it:

  •  A longer life for the engine
  •  Better adjustment of the fuel
  •  Less harm to the environment

 Last Thoughts

It's important for every fleet owner, driver, and transporter to know what AdBlue is.  If you drive a BharatBenz or an Ashok Leyland, knowing how AdBlue works will help you take better care of your truck and avoid problems on the road.

AdBlue is a significant part of why modern commercial cars are cleaner, smarter, and work better.
