The Puducherry government has now introduced 25 electric buses as an addition to its public transport fleet on 27 October 2025 under the Smart City program. The Olectra Greentech Ltd.-made buses are to help public urban mobility in the Union Territory.

The fleet contains 15 non-air-conditioned and 10 air-conditioned buses, each being nine metres long and able to travel a distance of up to 200 kilometres on a single charge. Designated charging points have also been installed for everyday use.

The buses will be operated and maintained by Evey Trans Pvt Ltd, a MEIL Group subsidiary, under a 12-year gross-cost-contracting model. The public transport department will continue to be responsible for collecting fares, with Evey Trans taking care of drivers, maintenance and charging of the vehicles. The model is aimed at sharing operational duty between the private operator and the government.

The launch of the buses comes in the wake of previous tests of electric vehicles in Puducherry. The buses are being put on some city routes, although precise timetables and routes have not been extensively outlined.

From an environmental point of view, the electric buses do not release exhaust gases while in use. The government has said the buses are part of long-term attempts at making urban transportation more efficient, including reliability and availability of service. Reduced noise and lowered emissions are expected secondary impacts.

Operational logistics consist of charging points at strategic depots and specific public points. Maintenance and driver management are the responsibility of Evey Trans, while the transport department retains responsibility for scheduling and fare collection. The gross-cost-contract model also ensures that budgeting is predictable and service standards are monitored.

The rollout represents a step in integrating electric vehicles into public transport, without committing to a complete transition from conventional buses at this stage. Authorities have indicated that future expansion will depend on usage patterns, infrastructure readiness, and operational performance.

On the whole, the deployment of 25 electric buses in Puducherry is part of continuing administrative efforts to seek alternatives to diesel-powered public transport. The buses are operating on designated city routes, with performance and uptake under observation for possible future modifications.
