Jupiter Electric Mobility, the electric division of Jupiter Wagons Limited, has expanded its retail footprint by opening five new showrooms across major Indian cities like New Delhi, Ghaziabad, Thiruvananthapuram, Ahmedabad and Pune. This network expansion now strengthens JEM's presence in seven operational cities, after earlier entries into Bengaluru and Hyderabad.
The sites selected for these EV showrooms in India are part of active freight and logistics corridors. Together, Maharashtra and Gujarat make up approximately 22% of the commercial vehicle market in India while Kerala continues to show high EV adoption with over 235,000 registered electric vehicles, comprising nearly 11% of the state's EV mix. By establishing new showrooms in zones of high demand, JEM’s expansion aligns with the nation’s spread of logistics than strictly urban retail.
Each facility is designed as an integrated hub—combining sales, after-sales support and maintenance—that becomes a source for improving service accessibility for fleet owners and logistics operators. The move by the company reflects a growing industry trend where manufacturers have been rapidly expanding commercial EV infrastructure to match the rise in take-up by transport businesses.
JEM's product line is supported by a new production facility at Pithampur near Indore, Madhya Pradesh. This plant, spread over 25 acres, has an annual manufacturing capacity of 8,000 to 10,000 electric light commercial vehicles. The plant also acts as a testing and R&D hub for developing models for varied Indian operating conditions, ranging from urban last-mile deliveries to short-haul cargo movement.
The company's focus on electric light commercial vehicles (LCVs) in India is reflective of a wider shift in the market. The increase in fuel costs, tighter emission requirements and government subsidies such as FAME-II, encourage small and medium fleet operators to think about electric vehicles. According to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), the LCV segment represents nearly 60% of India's goods transport vehicles, highlighting that the electric LCV segment is a significant growth segment.
The highlight of JEM's product line is the JEM TEZ, an electric LCV intended for the commercial and logistics space. It features a payload capacity of 1.05 tonnes, with an 80 kW peak motor and 23% gradeability for good performance in hilly or congested environments. The certified range of the vehicle is greater than 300 km on a single full charge and features lithium-ion battery packs with fast-charging capabilities.
In a market where uptime and payload are important considerations, these specifications are competitive in the market against diesel-powered vehicles, though it is likely that adoption will hinge on infrastructure development and the settlement of cost parity in the time frame.
In its inaugural operational year, Jupiter Electric Mobility is forecasting sales of approximately 400 electric LCVs, with a revenue target of ₹100 crore. While the numbers are conservative in comparison to traditional truck manufacturers, they are commendable given the relatively cautious and strategic scaling of the typical new market entrant within India’s electric commercial vehicle context.
Jupiter Electric Mobility's cautious expansion across seven cities suggests they are implementing both a pilot strategy to test the market, local partnerships, pilot delivery times, or other organizational factors before venturing into larger production volumes.
The vehicle electrification rate within India’s commercial vehicle sector is now below 3% of total CV sales, but it has begun to trend positive. Both the logistics and e-commerce industries, which are characterized by predictable daily routings and less severe control mechanisms, are leading the transition toward electric LCVs. In addition to rapid adoption rates, many new and available policies, from state-level mandates for EVs, to incentives to convert commercial fleets to EVs, continue to support electrification across transportation sectors.
