Delhi is set to revive its interstate bus service after a gap of nearly 15 years. The Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) will relaunch the service on September 23 with a fleet of fully electric buses. The first route will connect Delhi with Baraut in Uttar Pradesh, offering six daily trips.

Officials said Baraut was chosen as the pilot corridor for its strategic location and manageable travel time of around one and a half hours. The route is expected to meet strong commuter demand while being ideal for electric vehicle operations.

Interstate Bus Service: Digital Tickets and Affordable Fares

The new service promises a modern travel experience. Passengers will be able to book rides through an app-based digital system. Tickets will start at Rs 125, with a cashless, hassle-free process designed to make commuting simple and smooth.

"Baraut is chosen as it has been comparatively less connected via direct public transport options and people there expressed the need for better connectivity with Delhi," said an official working on the project. "The relatively short journey time ensures that the electric buses can run without range issues," he added.

Interstate Bus Service: Expansion to 15 More Cities

The Baraut service is only the beginning. Over the next few months, 15 new routes will be introduced, connecting Delhi to cities across six states. Destinations will include Ayodhya, Lucknow, Moradabad, Rishikesh, Haridwar, Dehradun, Jaipur, Alwar, Bikaner, Amritsar, Patiala, Chandigarh, Panipat and Jammu.

"The plan is to provide seamless connectivity to major urban centres while promoting electric mobility and sustainable transport across the region," said the official.

Interstate Bus Service: More Comfort and Safety Ahead

The first phase will use buses similar to DTC’s existing electric fleet in Delhi. But a second phase, expected in about two months, will introduce new luxury e-buses. These will feature larger seats, modern interiors and improved comfort designed for longer journeys.

All interstate buses will also come with CCTV cameras, GPS tracking and panic buttons to ensure a safe and secure travel environment.

Interstate Bus Service: A Return to Regional Connectivity

DTC’s interstate services were once popular among passengers, linking Delhi to destinations like Jaipur, Chandigarh, Udaipur, Shimla and Haridwar. The service was discontinued in 2010 due to the transition to CNG buses and lack of CNG pumps in neighbouring states. With the revival of interstate bus service, Delhi is positioning itself as a leader in sustainable transportation.
