India’s commercial vehicle market is at a critical juncture. Fleet owners are being pulled in two directions—tradition versus transition. On one side, there’s the time-tested reliability of diesel trucks; on the other, the cleaner, increasingly viable alternative: CNG. Which makes more sense? Let’s break it down.

Fuel Economics

Fuel costs are no small line item—they’re often the biggest operational expense in running a commercial fleet. At first glance, CNG trucks seem like a clear winner. Why? Because CNG is roughly 29% cheaper than diesel, a gap that can mean serious savings over thousands of kilometers. According to industry data, a price difference of 20–22 rupees per litre can be enough to nudge transporters toward CNG-powered commercial vehicles.

But—it’s never that simple.

While the pump price might favor CNG, the initial investment in a CNG truck can be steeper. Add to that the patchy CNG refueling infrastructure in parts of India, and suddenly the equation becomes more complex. A fleet owner must consider the total cost of ownership—purchase price, servicing, fuel economy, downtime, everything.

Performance & Maintenance

AspectDiesel TrucksCNG Trucks
Engine PerformanceBuilt for torque, power, and endurance—ideal for long hauls and heavy-duty loads.Cleaner combustion, but lower power output, which can impact performance on challenging terrains.
Refueling InfrastructureWell-established nationwide refueling network, great for intercity logistics.Limited refueling points, primarily in urban areas; infrastructure is still developing.
Maintenance NeedsHigher maintenance due to engine wear, soot buildup, and costlier parts.Lower maintenance costs and longer service intervals due to cleaner fuel combustion.
Environmental ImpactEmits more pollutants; contributes to higher CO₂ and particulate emissions.Lower emissions and less engine residue, supporting cleaner air and compliance with norms.

Environmental Impact

With emissions regulations tightening and sustainability becoming more than just a buzzword, CNG is an obvious step in the right direction. CNG trucks produce significantly lower CO₂ and particulate emissions than diesel trucks. That alone is a compelling argument for their adoption, especially in urban zones where air quality is a growing concern.

And let’s not forget, switching to cleaner fuels isn’t just good for the planet—it’s becoming a business advantage as well, with regulatory incentives and public perception playing into long-term brand value.

Market Trends

Strangely enough, despite the perks, CNG truck sales have dipped. At the end of FY22, CNG trucks accounted for a solid 38% of sales in the 10–15 tonne category. Fast forward, and that number plunged to just 4%. Why the nosedive?

A mix of factors: rising vehicle prices, inadequate CNG infrastructure outside metro zones, and ongoing economic uncertainty. Many buyers are playing it safe, defaulting back to diesel—at least for now. Still, the government isn’t backing down. Plans are underway to shift one-third of India’s heavy-duty truck fleet to LNG in the coming years.

Conclusion

If your operations are primarily based in cities or involve short intercity routes, choosing CNG trucks makes a lot of sense. They align well with sustainability goals, produce fewer emissions, and offer lower long-term costs thanks to reduced fuel and maintenance expenses. However, if your fleet is geared toward heavy-duty, long-distance hauling, diesel trucks may still be the better fit. Diesel engines deliver the power, torque, and range required for such tasks, and they benefit from a well-established refueling infrastructure—especially important if CNG stations are scarce along your routes.
