Blue Energy Motors (BEM) launched India's first heavy-duty electric truck with advanced battery swapping technology, a great step towards India's transition to sustainable freight transport. The launch was held at BEM's manufacturing plant at Chakan in Maharashtra, where BEM also announced investment of ₹3,500 crores for raising the firm’s EV production capacity.
The new truck is intended for India's harsh long-haul roads, makes battery swapping easy, requiring less than five minutes which reduces downtime than normal charging vastly. It has modular battery packs of between 282 kWh and 423 kWh, with an operational distance of up to 200 km between swaps.
BEM's business model brings the concept of Energy-as-a-Service (EaaS), with the battery never leaving company control and fleet operators only requiring to pay for the energy consumed or per swap. This model can cut the initial cost of the vehicle up to by half and offer fixed operating costs for business.
The firm also opened the Mumbai–Pune electric corridor, with battery-swap points and high-power charging points as part of a larger network that will have over 1,200 swap points spread across India. This system is expected to make electric heavy-truck transportation both feasible and scalable.
BEM claims its plan addresses the four tricky challenges to the adoption of EVs in freight: range, prolonged charging times, high upfront cost and charging infrastructure requirements. With the new platform, the brand is established as a pioneer in clean logistics contributing to India's carbon reduction ambition.
The launch of the truck emphasizes Maharashtra's vision for clean mobility and establishes a new standard for electric commercial vehicles in India.
