In India's expanding small commercial vehicle market, two players hold their grounds—Mahindra Bolero Maxx HD and Tata Intra V70. Both the trucks are aimed at businesses looking for payload capacity, robustness, and fuel economy. But what really is their comparison in practical terms?
The Mahindra Bolero Maxx HD has a boxy, utility-oriented look that is tried and tested. Its high ground clearance and broad cargo deck make it functional on uneven ground and heavier loads.
On the other hand, the Tata Intra V70 is more inclined towards modernity. Its cabin is more ergonomic, and the inside finish is nearer to passenger-grade qualities. Nevertheless, it doesn't do away with ruggedness.
Power is paramount, particularly in the commercial category. The Bolero Maxx HD accommodates a 2.5L m2Di engine, calibrated for torque over speed. It produces 70 HP and 200 Nm torque, best suited for city-to-village deliveries.
The Intra V70 comes with a newer 1.5L DI engine, but develops 80 HP and 220 Nm torque. Even though it has less displacement, it provides more peak torque, and gets it sooner.
Payload capacity usually seals the deal. The Bolero Maxx HD has a payload of up to 1,300 kg, variant depending. Its greater wheelbase enables stable load transfer, particularly on bumpy roads.
The Tata Intra V70 has a little less payload at 1,200 kg but high marks for load accessibility with its lower loading position and superior suspension calibration.
For high-volume haulers, the Bolero Maxx HD seems like the smarter choice. But when handling ease is a concern, the Intra V70 provides more composure.
The cabin in the Bolero Maxx HD is bare-bones-functional but old-school. The analog controls, hard seats, and minimal technology bear witness to its utilitarian roots.
On the contrary, Tata Intra V70 shocks with digital clusters, adjustable seats, and a generally more sophisticated dashboard arrangement. For everyday users traveling great distances, Intra V70 provides an advantage in comfort.
The Bolero Maxx HD is priced a bit lower at the base, which makes it an attractive option for fleet customers. Mahindra has a massive rural distribution network so the parts and service are readily available even in the remotest areas.
The Intra V70 is priced a little more, but gets more service intervals and improved technology integration. Tata Motors' commercial vehicle support has increased dramatically over the years, particularly in urban and semi-urban areas.
It's not a matter of which one is "better." It's a matter of which one is best for your job.
If you're carrying heavy loads over rugged terrain, the Bolero Maxx HD stands up. If you require power, technology, and driveability in a wide range of conditions, the Intra V70 provides more.
