The transport department has moved a proposal to the Union government. The plan is to set up an e-bus depot for KSRTC Mysuru division. It will come up on 4.5 acres at Banni Mantap. This is the same site where KSRTC is building a new suburban bus stand within its sprawling depot.
The new facility will serve only electric buses. It will have a dedicated charging station. A parking lot for e-buses. Restrooms. And other basic facilities. Once ready, it can handle up to 100 electric buses at a time. Officials say this will give a big push to sustainable transport in Mysuru.
KSRTC Mysuru division currently runs diesel buses from depots at Vijayanagar, Sathagalli, Kuvempu Nagar and Banni Mantap. The proposed depot will be exclusively for Mysuru e-buses.
KSRTC Mysuru divisional manager HT Veeresh said, “The department already sent this proposal for the establishment of e-bus depot in Mysuru, after identifying 4.5 acres of land available at Banni Mantap.”
The proposal is part of the Pradhan Mantri e-drive scheme. This ₹10,500 crore plan will roll out 14,028 e-buses in nine cities, including Bengaluru, between 2024 and 2026. It aims to expand EV infrastructure, with 72,000 charging points in cities and along highways.
Bengaluru has already received 2,000 electric buses. Another 2,500 are due by 2026. Mysuru has also received electric buses under the scheme.
The Mysuru e-bus depot will have charging hubs with heavy-duty plugs. These can charge buses fitted with 145-kilowatt electric motors. The plan also includes charging stations at the city bus stand and the KSRTC suburban bus stand.
Officials say this is key to building EV infrastructure in Mysuru. It will ensure smooth operations for the growing electric bus fleet. And it will take Mysuru transport closer to a clean and green future.
