Daimler India Commercial Vehicles (DICV), the Indian arm of Daimler Truck AG, has reported a commendable 10.5% year-on-year increase in its bus sales for 2024, a clear signal of a resurgent commercial vehicle sector and strengthening domestic demand. This uptick, underpinned by a confluence of favorable economic conditions and strategic product deployment, highlights DICV's growing foothold in India’s bus industry through its BharatBenz brand.

A Market in Motion

The Indian bus market, long characterized by cyclical fluctuations, appears to be on firmer ground. In 2024, DICV not only capitalized on this momentum but helped shape it. The company’s performance is not an isolated spike but rather the result of deliberate planning, targeted investments, and a nuanced understanding of evolving customer needs. Private transporters, educational institutions, and the tourism sector, all key drivers of bus demand contributed to this notable rise in sales.

Strategic Expansion and Innovation

To sustain this growth trajectory, DICV unveiled 14 new models during the year, encompassing both buses and rigid heavy-duty trucks. Notably, the introduction of Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) options in select models signals a shift towards greater operational efficiency and driver comfort. These enhancements are not mere product updates; they represent a calculated response to both market pressures and customer expectations.

Meanwhile, production capabilities have also kept pace. The company’s Oragadam manufacturing facility witnessed a significant expansion, with its annual capacity climbing from 36,000 to 45,000 vehicles. This augmentation wasn’t confined to trucks and buses production lines, too, were scaled up to accommodate increasing order volumes.

Exports and Financial Fortitude

On the global front, DICV maintained a steady rhythm. While exports did not witness the same sharp rise as domestic sales, the company continued to serve over 60 international markets under the BharatBenz, Mercedes-Benz, and Fuso brands. This consistent export performance is a testament to DICV’s resilient supply chain and brand reliability across geographies.

Financially, the firm experienced an exceptional leap. Net profit for FY24 rose nearly fivefold, reaching ₹1,787 crore. The surge stemmed not only from higher vehicle sales but also from improved operational efficiencies, stringent cost control measures, and an emphasis on value-driven engineering.

Looking Ahead

Despite a relatively subdued start to the calendar year—largely attributed to broader macroeconomic uncertainties DICV remains optimistic about the months ahead. The Indian government's continued investments in infrastructure, combined with rising urban mobility needs, are expected to spur further demand in the commercial vehicle space.

DICV's roadmap is clear: continue innovating, expand intelligently, and stay attuned to the pulse of the market. In a sector where momentum can be elusive, the company’s strong 2024 performance places it in an enviable position, ready to leverage future growth opportunities both at home and abroad.
