Abu Dhabi Mobility has kicked off its first pilot programme for autonomous delivery vehicles in Masdar City. The initiative marks a major step in the emirate’s plan to build a smarter and more sustainable transport system.

The trial is being carried out under the supervision of the Smart and Autonomous Systems Council, in partnership with the Abu Dhabi Investment Office. It also includes the issuance of Abu Dhabi’s first official license plate for a self-driving delivery vehicle.

The programme is run in collaboration with K2 and EMX, the logistics division of 7X. The vehicles are developed by Autogo, a subsidiary of K2, and equipped with artificial intelligence and smart mobility systems that allow them to complete deliveries without human drivers.

Dr Abdulla Hamad AlGhfeli, Acting Director General of Abu Dhabi Mobility, described the project as “a pivotal milestone in Abu Dhabi's journey towards building a smart, sustainable transport system.” He said the initiative reflects the emirate’s commitment to global solutions supported by a clear regulatory framework.

Masdar City is serving as the testing ground, but operations are expected to expand across Abu Dhabi in the months ahead. The programme aligns with the emirate’s transport strategy, which aims for a quarter of all trips to be made using smart mobility by 2040.

Tariq Al Wahedi, Group CEO of 7X, said the company sees strategic value in integrating autonomous delivery vehicles into Abu Dhabi’s logistics framework. He added that the company is dedicated to building solutions that are “faster, safer, more adaptable, and more sustainable.”

The vehicles are designed to reduce congestion, cut emissions and improve delivery services. If this becomes successful, it will support the broader sustainability agenda of the country and also enhance the logistics infrastructure.

Once the regulations are approved, Autogo has plans to expand its operations. This can lead to a wider deployment in the near future as new partnerships will help to  extend coverage across public areas.

The project also supports the autonomous vehicle industries cluster which focuses on developing the local production and autonomous systems.

The pilot reflects a close partnership between the public and private sectors in building the  future of sustainable transportation. It also reflects Abu Dhabi’s goals to lead in autonomous driving technology and set new benchmarks for sustainable transportation.
