India Energy Week did not emerge as a fully established international conference. Its form, size and impact have gradually evolved over the years, which is also a testament to the evolution of India’s energy strategy itself. A look back at the previous editions helps explain why expectations for 2026 are already high.
The first edition of India Energy Week was held in Bengaluru in February 2023. At that point, the agenda was simple yet audacious: growth, cooperation and transition. A lot of discussion was centered around the need to prove that India could discuss clean energy without losing sight of size and affordability.
The introduction of E20 petrol was one such event that stood out not for its fanfare but for its significance. Ethanol blending was no longer a promise for the future but a reality that was being implemented. There were other smaller yet significant events that took place around it, such as the use of recycled PET bottles for uniforms, green mobility rallies and the likes of the Surya Nutan solar cooking system.
By the time the India Energy Week conference moved to Goa in 2024, the atmosphere had changed. Energy security was on the agenda. The long-term gas agreement with Qatar was one such reminder. Indigenous technology also began to get the spotlight, particularly in the hydrogen space with the launch of India-developed electrolyzers. There was definitely a tilt towards the Global South, with India being the bridge between developed energy infrastructure and developing nations that are still struggling with energy access and affordability.
In New Delhi in 2025, India Energy Week marked a new milestone. The presence of ministers and exhibitors were difficult to overlook. More significantly, the talk was about execution. The import of LNG to Nepal for the first time, the introduction of hydrogen buses, the application of AI in the pipelines and refineries were topics that were being discussed, infrastructure was being exhibited and investors asked more demanding questions. India was not only participating in international energy debates but was also starting to shape them.
Taken together, the three events give a clear indication of what is happening. The India Energy Week has moved from the stage of intention (2023), to the stage of alignment (2024), to the stage of action (2025). With the 2026 edition scheduled to take place in Goa, it is expected that the focus will become even sharper. The themes are expected to be hydrogen, biofuels, EV charging and decarbonization, but with a much more discerning eye on what actually works. Going by the past editions, the India Energy Week 2026 will be more of a checkpoint than a showcase.
