PMPML Double-decker Bus Trials Successful, Service to Begin by Diwali

Pune’s public transport is set for an upgrade. The Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) successfully tested its first double-decker bus. Commuters in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad can expect the service to start by Diwali.

Double-decker Bus Trials Completed on Busy Routes

The trial ran on one of Pune’s busiest commuter routes. Senior PMPML officials and staff rode on the bus. Chennai-based manufacturer Switch built the vehicle. During the test, officials checked performance in city traffic, passenger comfort, and road readiness. PMPML confirmed that the bus met all expectations and suits Pune’s urban mobility needs.

PMPML chairman and managing director Pankaj Deore said, “The preliminary test runs were successful, and we are confident about introducing double-decker buses in Pune soon. Initially, they will operate on four major routes—Hinjewadi, Magarpatta, Kharadi, and Chinchwad—with additional services along the Alandi-Dehu corridor. By Diwali, we aim to deploy 10 buses. These vehicles will carry more passengers, enhance commuting comfort, and support our goal of eco-friendly, high-capacity urban transport.”

Double-decker Bus: More Capacity for Commuters

The new buses carry up to 85 passengers. Regular PMPML buses carry about 60. The larger capacity will ease congestion during peak office hours. Routes serving IT hubs like Hinjewadi and Kharadi will benefit the most.

Ankita Patil, a software engineer from Kharadi, said, “Right now, I often have to wait for two or three buses before getting a seat during peak hours. Once these double-decker buses start running, they will reduce crowds and save so much time. For daily commuters like me, this will be a big relief.”

With the trial complete, PMPML prepares for further route testing. By Diwali, commuters can ride modern double-decker buses that offer comfort, convenience, and higher capacity.
