M and M Leads April Auto Sales Growth, Surpasses Tata Motors and Hyundai

With outstanding April 2025 sales that exceeded Tata Motors and Hyundai by a notable margin, Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) appears to be clearly ranking second in India's competitive automobile industry.

With 84,170 units sold in April, the native car major claimed a strong 19% year-on-year increase. More importantly, M&M's SUV sales jumped an amazing 28% to 52,330 units, clearly proving its supremacy in the very profitable utility vehicle market.

"Building on the strong momentum of last year's performance, we began the year on a strong note in April by achieving SUV sales of 52,330 units, a growth of 28% and total vehicle sales of 84,170 units, a 19% growth over the same month last year," said Veejay Nakra, President, Automotive Division, M&M Ltd. "These figures show the strength of our portfolio and customer choices."

Reducing the divide by rivals

The outstanding performance is somewhat different from the challenges its main rivals experience. With domestic PV shipments falling to 45,199 units in April 2025 against 47,883 units in April 2024, Tata Motors reported a 6% drop in passenger vehicle sales. Comparatively to M&M's passenger vehicle sales, this shows a discrepancy of more than 7,000 vehicles.

With domestic shipments falling 8.9% year-on-year to 44,474 units in April 2025, Hyundai Motor India had an even more sharp drop and left a significant margin of almost 8,000 units against M&M's passenger vehicle division.

With M&M now clearly the second-largest passenger car manufacturer in India by shipments behind only Maruti Suzuki, this performance marks a dramatic change in the competitive scene.

Commercial vehicles show mixed outcomes

M&M's commercial vehicle business exhibited mixed results, however its passenger vehicle line was the standout performance. With its LCV sector expanding by 9% to 19,141 units and LCV and MHCV segment gaining 10% to 1,196 units, the company reported total domestic CV sales of 22,989 units for April.

But the smaller LCV 2T sector saw a 21% drop to 2,652 units, reflecting similar difficulties Tata Motors encountered in its Small Commercial Vehicle division, which suffered a 23% drop.

The April sales numbers reveal quite different fortunes for India's leading manufacturers. While Tata Motors and Hyundai have struggled to keep momentum, M&M has profited from great demand for its SUV portfolio driven by models like the Scorpio-N and XUV700.

In April, Tata Motors' commercial vehicle division reported an 8% year-on-year drop to 27,221 units; domestic CV sales dropped 10% to 25,764 units. Reflecting ongoing financing difficulties experienced by first-time users and rental customers, the company's SCV freight and pickup category was most affected with sales falling 23% to 9,131 units.

Including electric vehicles, Tata's passenger vehicle segment saw a 5% year-on-year drop to 45,532 units. Sales of electric vehicles followed their declining trend, dropping 16% to 5,318 units, therefore prolonging the difficult pattern observed over FY25.

Hyundai seems to be struggling with inventories as well; its April wholesale decline to 44,374 units suggests dealers may be cautious given softer-than-expected retail demand, as it reduces 7,446 units from March.

Looking Ahead M&M's exceptional April result points to the company's targeted SUV approach paying well in a very competitive industry. M&M is well-positioned to keep its momentum through 2025 given robust export growth of 82% and a bright outlook for its tractor division, which rose 8% to 38,516 units in April.

End Note

M&M's ability to surpass Tata Motors and Hyundai signals a major turning point in its climb to become a major player in India's passenger vehicle industry as the competitive dynamics of India's automotive sector continue to change.

Data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) indicates that the April numbers also point to M&M perhaps expanding on its retail success in March, when it had already outpaced Hyundai by selling 48,462 units at the retail level compared to Hyundai's 42,511 units. Given its robust product range and rising market acceptance, the issue now is whether M&M can maintain this outstanding performance over the rest of 2025, thereby perhaps securing its second-largest passenger vehicle maker position after Maruti Suzuki.
