The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has issued Direction No. 94, which requires motor vehicle aggregators, delivery service providers, and e-commerce businesses operating in the Delhi-NCR area to switch to cleaner cars. This is a significant step in reducing air pollution in the area.

With immediate effect, the regulation would only allow the addition of CNG or electric three-wheeler autorickshaws to commercial fleets. Additionally, new 4-wheeler LCVs, 2-wheelers, and Light Goods Vehicles (LGVs weighing less than 3.5 tons) powered by gasoline or diesel would not be permitted to join the NCR's current fleets as of January 1, 2026.

Delhi, Gurugram, Faridabad, Noida, Greater Noida, and Ghaziabad are among the major NCR cities covered by the directive; these areas all experience serious air quality problems, especially in the winter.

The transportation industry continues to contribute significantly to the pollution levels in the NCR, hence the CAQM underlined the urgent need to cut emissions from this sector. According to the Commission's statement, "Commercial vehicles contribute disproportionately to urban air pollution due to their high mileage and frequently poor maintenance."

A specialized website for registering and tracking business fleets has already been launched by the Delhi government. Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan, the other NCR states, have been instructed to establish such platforms and guarantee adherence. In the upcoming weeks, public awareness efforts are also anticipated to be launched in these states.

The new requirement comes after previous directives from the CAQM that mandated that only electric or CNG autorickshaws be registered for the first time in NCR districts beginning in 2023, with diesel automobiles being phased out by 2026.

By taking this action, the government hopes to accelerate the transition to zero-emission cars in high-mileage industries and bolster regional air quality initiatives.

It is currently anticipated that companies in the ride-hailing, delivery, and e-commerce sectors will start converting their fleets before the 2026 deadline.
