A Bold Step Toward Sustainable Industrial Transport

In a milestone move for India's green mobility transition, the Adani Group has unveiled the nation’s first hydrogen-powered truck dedicated to mining logistics. The groundbreaking initiative was officially launched on May 10, 2025, in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, where Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai flagged off the vehicle. This marks a significant step in reducing the carbon footprint of one of the country’s most resource-intensive sectors.

An Engineering Feat in Zero-Emission Transport

Designed to carry up to 40 tonnes and travel approximately 200 kilometers, the hydrogen truck operates using fuel cells powered by green hydrogen. Unlike traditional diesel trucks, this vehicle emits only water vapor and heat, producing no greenhouse gases or particulate matter. Its silent operation is another advantage, dramatically reducing noise pollution within mining zones.

What sets this vehicle apart is not just its eco-friendly performance, but it's real-world utility in a demanding sector. Deployed for coal transportation from the Gare Pelma III Block to a nearby state-run power plant, the truck’s integration into heavy logistics demonstrates the viability of clean energy even in the most rugged industrial environments.

Collaboration Driving Innovation

This first-of-its-kind hydrogen logistics solution is the result of a strategic collaboration among key industry players. Adani Natural Resources (ANR) is managing operations, while Adani New Industries Limited (ANIL) — the Group’s clean energy arm — provides the hydrogen infrastructure and fuel cell systems. Together, they represent Adani Enterprises' unified commitment to advancing India’s clean energy agenda.

In addition, Ashok Leyland has contributed the truck’s platform and engineering expertise, ensuring the vehicle meets performance standards required in mining. Complementing this, Canada-based Ballard Power Systems has supplied the advanced 120 kW PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane) fuel cell engines that convert hydrogen into electricity to power the truck.

Transforming the Mining Ecosystem

Beyond the introduction of the hydrogen truck, Adani is reimagining the mining ecosystem itself. At the Gare Pelma III site, the company is deploying autonomous dozer-push systems, integrating solar energy generation, and implementing tree transplantation programs — all of which underscore its commitment to responsible resource extraction.

Such initiatives reflect a layered sustainability approach: while decarbonizing transport logistics, Adani is also digitizing and greening the overall mining process. It’s a holistic model that other industrial sectors may look to as a blueprint for transition.

A Catalyst for India’s Green Hydrogen Goals

India has pledged to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2070, and hydrogen is widely viewed as a cornerstone of that journey. Adani’s hydrogen truck project is not only aligned with national goals, but actively pushes the boundaries of what’s technologically and commercially possible today.

Vinay Prakash, CEO of Adani Natural Resources and Director at Adani Enterprises, emphasized this point:

“The initiative for hydrogen-powered trucks is a significant step towards Adani Group's commitment to decarbonisation and responsible mining. We are creating model mines with minimal environmental impact by incorporating autonomous dozer push technologies, solar power, digital initiatives, and tree transplanters to relocate trees. We aim to ensure affordable and reliable electricity for all while pioneering new standards in sustainable mining practices”

Conclusion

Adani’s deployment of India’s first hydrogen-powered mining truck is a national marker of progress in clean industrial logistics. By fusing innovation, environmental responsibility, and cross-sectoral collaboration, the Group is charting a new path forward for India’s energy and infrastructure sectors.
