If you think motor racing is all about sleek Formula cars or motorcycles zipping around, think again. There is a whole world where massive trucks, the kind that normally haul cargo, get a serious adrenaline makeover and hit the tracks. Yep, truck racing is a real thing and it is way more intense than you might imagine.

Truck Racing: How It All Started

Truck racing kicked off at the Atlanta Motor Speedway in the United States on 17th June 1979. Back then, they used regular working trucks on dirt or paved ovals. Imagine watching a semi-truck trying to drift around a curve, it was chaotic in the best way. After 1986, the trucks got stripped down and modified heavily. Some lost over 2000 pounds making them surprisingly nimble for their size.

The idea caught on globally. Europe created the FIA European Truck Racing Championship in 1985 and Brazil introduced Fórmula Truck in 1996, featuring factory teams and a lot of bragging rights. Racing Trucks and Specifications

The trucks themselves are beasts. European racing trucks weigh at least 5500 kilograms and pack 12-liter turbocharged diesel engines. The tyres are made of sticky rubber to hold the asphalt like glue and speed is capped at 160 kilometers per hour, mainly because no one wants a semi-truck flying off the track.

Equipment and Safety Gear

Truck racing drivers do not just hop in and go. Safety gear is a huge deal when it comes to racing with these giant vehicles:

• Gloves: Thin Nomex gloves with suede palms let drivers feel every vibration through the steering wheel.
  
• Helmet: Full-face helmets made of Kevlar or carbon fiber protect from impacts and flying debris.
  
• Boots: Fireproof leather boots with rubber soles help drivers keep their footwork smooth and secure.
  
• Balaclava: Covers the face but leaves eyes exposed. Simple yet strangely stylish.
  
• Driving Suit: A fire-retardant one-piece suit made of Nomex protects from burns for at least twelve seconds. Extra long flameproof underwear adds another layer of safety. There are shoulder handles to lift a driver out if the truck decides to throw a tantrum.
